Tour Overview

Although not a traditional restaurant, no list of Stone Town’s best eateries would be complete without mentioning the night market in the Forodhani Park. Every day, from 6pm onwards, the park is home to a fantastic open-air food market, where locals and tourists stroll amongst the many different vendors to try the wide variety of cuisines on offer, from pizza and samosas to sugar-cane juice. This is one of the best things to do in Zanzibar, especially if you want a real taste of the local culture whilst enjoying delicious street food, and is a key experience for travelers that want to get in touch with Stone Town’s warm and vibrant community.

What To Expect

The Forodhani Gardens (Jamituri Gardens on some maps) are between the Arab Fort and the sea, overlooked by the house of wonders. Forodhani means 'customs' and this is close to the site of the original customs house. The gardens were first laid out in 1936 to commemorate the Silver Jubilee of Sultan Khalifa (sultan from 1911 to 1960), and were called Jubilee Gardens until the 1964 Revolution.
This is a popular place for local people in the evenings and there are some stalls serving drinks and snacks. In the centre of the gardens is a podium where the band of the sultan's army used to play for the public. Nearer the sea is a white concrete arabesque arch which was built in 1956 for the visit of Princess Margaret (sister of Queen Elizabeth II of Britain), although this was never officially used, as the princess arrived at the dhow harbour instead. She did visit the gardens, however, and planted the large tree with creepers that can still be seen today.
